Formartine in Bloom

Proudly Sponsored By

This competition commenced in 2005 and the participating Communities are assessed not only on the quality of their floral display, but also on environmental quality (cleanliness and tidiness of the display areas), recycling and community involvement. Its popularity has grown, resulting in an average of 14 communities entering on an annual basis. The competition is split into three categories small, medium and large settlements, dependant on the number of residents. Judging of the summer displays takes place in August but many communities also have displays in the spring to be enjoyed.   There is an Annual Awards Ceremony where the keenly awaited results are announced and communities receive their certificates and prizes for the winners and runners up in each category.

Each community has a core group of volunteers who look after the floral displays, and in some of the settlements this is undertaken by a small number of people – so new volunteers are always welcome. The areas cared for by these groups have increased over the years – not only the main streets and entrance routes to the settlements but in other communal areas including around sheltered housing for example. The hard work and commitment of these groups provide stunning displays for all to enjoy.   Not only is the overall appearance and cleanliness of the communities enhanced, resulting in a higher quality environment for those residing in the individual settlements and within the Formartine area itself, but also a sense of pride for the residents and volunteers alike.
